Should teachers be armed?

No. I work with enough people with short fuses and other issues to know that I would not want any one of them to have a gun. I don't even want a gun. What if a kid got a hold of it? Duh!

I don't have any answers...I just know there are only a few people I would trust to be even-tempered enough to carry a gun. One of the teachers I work does carry a gun when she's not in school...she's a good shot, too. Her? I trust her.

My uncle was an expert marksman. He once shot himself while cleaning his gun. A few years ago...he killed himself (on purpose) with a gun. So, he knew how to use it, does that mean he should have had one? NO.

The only people who should be carrying guns in school sould be the ones who have passed extensive annual testing of their firearm knowledge and have a minimum accuracy rating...

if they happen to be a teacher, excellent! Allow them to strap it on with pride so that all know that not only does she/he know how to use it, but they can put two in chest and one between the eyes before the smoke exits the barrel...

I think that teacher would be listened to a bit more closely...

I work with one teacher, Nam vet...chopper pilot...I'd trust him. I think I could trust one of the vice-principals and the other teacher I mentioned.

We have cops that are in and out of the school quite often, but I wish we had one or two all of the time. Our school is too big for our two three unarmed security guards. One is a former cop...I could add him to the list of armed and ready.

I've seen kids take off their "colors" when they enter school...that is beginning to worry me. How soon until what is behind the "colors" follows them into the school?

BTW...I teach in a school where we are the only one in the area not totally overrun by gangs. Although....there have been some really good arrests lately.

The best shot I've met yet is my wife... now you know why we're married!!

Shotgun wedding? :)

I tried to shoot a shotgun one day...How do you miss a target when buckshot is involved???? I found a way. I'd sorely disappoint Dick Cheney.

I couldn't stop laughing when it was time to shoot, too. It was a weird sense of power for me, but I was so nervous. Guns scare me anyway. A girlfriend of a guy friend of mine followed me around his house one night while carrying and carelessly point a gun at me...head region...eeek! What an idiot.

The security in schools should definitely become a top priority. Somehow people become cheap when we start talking about infrastructure. You can wire an entire school with CC TV cameras and sallyport the main doors. It would not be hard to do. Controlling access and securing the grounds could be done with minimun investment and minimum personnell.

My last superintendant wouldn't even put cameras up at the schools...some nonesense about privacy.

We have cameras and are working on the swipe card thing for the entrances...also limiting access to certain doors. I never feel safe, though. I deal with 1600 kids with hormones all over the place.
